Date Bars! (as requested.)

 ( Date Filling (below))

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine, or butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
1 3/4 cups all purpose or wholewheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups quick- cooking oats
 Prepare date filling. Heat oven to 400 degrees.. Mix brown sugar, margarine,and shortening. Mix in remaining ingredients. Press half of the mixture in a greased oblong pan 13x9x2 inches; spread with filling. Top with remaining crumbly mixture, pressing lightly.
Bake until light brown, 25 to 30 minutes. cut into bars about 2x1in. while warm. Makes 3 dozen bars.

Date filling
 Heat 1 pound of dates, cut up ( about 3 cups), 1 1/2 cups water and 1/4 sugar over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 10 min; Cool.

 Jam Bars: Substitute 1 cup jam for the date filling.

 I leave out the sugar in the dates. I sometimes put bran in the oatmeal mix. Do not over cook it will be dry.
