Where I Belong!

The bird, let loose in Eastern skies,
     When hastening fondly home,
Ne’er stoops to earth her wing, nor flies
     Where idle warblers roam;
But high she shoots through air and light,
     Above all low delay,
Where nothing earthly bounds her flight
     Nor shadow dims her way.

              Thomas Moore.

I stand here under the trees the sound of water dripping off the branches after a night of heavy rain. The trees are filled with what I think are Cedar or maybe Bohemian Waxwings. They looked very gray in the dullness of the day. They did have the tell-tale red spot on the wing and the yellow tip on the tail. They fill the trees like a bird canopy above my head. They flit from tree, to tree. They are chirping but not very much, they are more interested in what they are eating. I think it must be insects or the buds on the trees this unusual December day. The near silence is shattered by the deafening sound of Canada Geese flying overhead. They are flying in every direction not just one, as if they are confused by the weather as much as I.

The Waxwings appear to be as curious of me as I of them. They sit and watch, then eat then watch some more. The sun comes out and their brilliant colours show. Without the sun I am sure I would not have guessed what they were, their colour hidden by the shadows of the clouds.

This is the most peaceful I have felt in months. The hustle and bustle of the last month now a blur in my memory. I can only focus on the beauty that surrounds me as I stand here under these trees. This is my place of happiness; this is truly where I belong.  I may not know exactly what these birds are but I am positive of how they made me feel. True happiness.
Happy Holidays everyone. I just had to share.

Later.

  2. Waxwings are clever birds. They know when our cherries are almost ripe and can pick our whole crop in a matter of days. Saves us a lot of work, but I wish they'd leave a few for us. In fact I think most birds are a lot smarter than we think.

    I'm glad things are peaceful there for a while. You deserve it for certain.

  6. Glad you shared a peaceful post. It's a good time for it! The cardinals have just returned to our yard. I have food to put out for them after the rain. They come back about this time every year and their brilliant red is a sight to behold.
