Internet Woes!

Nature knows no pause in progress and development,
and attaches her curse on all inaction.
                Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Has anyone been missing me commenting on their blogs? I have been trying but all I get is a little blue circle going round and round. I have frustratingly been posting my blog early in the morning, the morning before you see it. I do this so I know it will be automatically posted at 6:00 am the next morning with no surprises.

Living in the country I have always expected slow uploading and downloading and I have learned to be very patient and I was truly accepting that. No videos or few videos and such. This summer my reception has been terrible and I could not figure out what was going on. I resorted to wandering around my house with my laptop trying to find the perfect place where I could get a stronger signal. I pay handsomely for this terrible service but I was OK with that because (in my head) I need to blog.

My neighbour dropped over with a fresh Blueberry Cheesecake on the weekend (yes this happens all the time I love my neighbourhood I have amazing neighbours) and I was sharing with her my internet woes. Well she told me a story that makes perfect sense and explains what is going on. She works at a fancy Truck Stop a couple of miles from the back of the farm on a very busy major highway and they now have free Wi-Fi. Now I get it.

I decided I would go and check it out in the morning, so I got up early Monday morning and after eating a huge piece of that delicious Blueberry Cheesecake for breakfast then taking my regular tour of the bush I got myself ready and headed over to this Truck Stop.

I drove over to this place and parked in the very full parking lot and walked in through the huge glass doors, it was packed wall to wall, iPods, iPads, laptops, cell phones and people, a small city’s worth of people. I could see everyone sitting relaxing and eating their food while connected to the big invisible Internet signal in the very blue sky. My, big invisible Internet signal coming from the very blue sky. Drat, I am doomed.

I pulled out my iPhone (a gift from M that is not connected to a server) and turned it on, just as I suspected it worked. I surfed the web and read a few of your wonderful blogs but I must admit the screen is very small and I am not really enjoying this experience. There was not one seat to sit and I soon became bored with standing and squinting so I headed back home having solved this mystery. I had to come up with a plan. I sat down with another piece of that Cheesecake. I always think better with food.

I think I came up with a plan to teach that Truck stop a lesson in sharing, let me know what you think.

Swamp food not Truck Stop food.

When I go to the bush early in the mornings from now on I will carry my laptop in my back pack, instead of my usual food as to not attract the bears (dumb bear feeder person). I will hike to the back of the farm cross the swamp as long as it stays dry, if it rains I may need a boat, I will cross the field. I will go over the barbed wire fence; I will try to climb the page wire fence, I may have to slide under that one. I will hop over the rail fence then walk across our hay field, jump the neighbour’s fence, and go through the neighbours bush making noise to alert the bear. I will cross the other neighbours fields and fences and some neighbours I do not know (I hope they are friendly). I will walk down the old deserted boundary road and enter this big fancy Truck Stop. I will order a $1.50 cup of Tim Horton’s coffee and go find a seat near the big window. I will pull out my laptop hoping it made this trip intact. I will log on to that free Wi Fi and sit there and use this free service for hours before heading back through the bush, under and over fences avoiding bears and other wildlife. I will cross the swamp and hike to the house I will lie down in my nice bed and sleep for a couple of hours.

Take that Fancy Truck Stop.

Later.

  5. Haha ...I bet you get fed up with all the toing and froing in no time at all. I suggest you set your alarm for around 4-5am and use you laptop then. Most are asleep so it won't be so congested at that time of day.

  7. Internet woes are so frustrating! We can only connect by a wifi card, so when there are clouds and such it's super slow. But at least it's better than when we used to have dial up, lol.

  8. hmmmm. i don't get it. so...what happens is that because of this new truck stop with their WiFi...it just kind of sucks all connectiveness out of the space in the area??
    that really does suck...literally!

    what a pain.
the cheesecake will surely help (yum, one of my all time favorites!!) with this frustration...but there must be something you can do. you shouldn't have to hike through woods & yards & go over & under...just for a good connection!!

*maybe it'll improve...i think lots of people are having all kinds of problems with blogger lately...
(entire blogs disappearing...text highlighting itself for no reason...formatting not working...blahblahblah)
hang in there...and enjoy that cheesecake!

  10. I hope that you can continue to blog, however knowing where you are planning to do all this hiking can't say I am 100% in favour of it. Glad you enjoyed your cheesecake, I have been being good, although I did have 2 corn the other night :(

  12. oh no, watch out for those bears! what kind of bear do you have there? when we hike, i'm terrified of running into bears. we did see 3 baby cubs while out hiking last fall and heard mama growling at us from up on the hill, although we couldn't see her...it was scary! hope your internet issues get resolved soon! that's so frustrating!

  14. I hate pee in your Cheerios B, but if you are paying $1.50 for coffee it isn't free wi fi!

  15. I have had the blue circles for a while even when I'm directly connected to wire. It only blue circles on Blogger for me. Takes twice the time to make a post!

  16. We're on secure satelite internet, and it's slower than molasses in January with frequent stalls. FRUSTRATING!

  17. I can't understand this. Can't you get yourself wifi enabled? Or move the farm closer to the truck stop. Or get yourself a truck. I don't know about wifi, I thought it was everywhere. Stay well clear of those bears, and barbed wire.

  18. Maybe the internet will settle down after the Olympics.

  19. LOL! Way to show that truck stop who's boss! :-)

  20. I have been getting your comments and I so appreciate them, because I know how hard and costly service is for you. You know you could have several posts ready to go with this plan and then put them on the timed thing so they post throughout the week. At least then you wouldn't have to hike all of the time to the nice truck stop.

  21. It is almost surreal to read about internet problems, I think because we are in the city and take for granted all the towers and good reception around. Just be safe and careful... at least you pay for the coffee, when I was in college and had no money, i used my neighbor's connection *embarrassed*

  22. haha...i think you should just drive!! bring your pc and sit in your car/truck. it will work just fine and you won't have to worry about seating options!!

  23. Moving house Saturday so can appreciate how you must feel about relying on the internet as we won't have any for a short while.

  24. i'm a bit confused. does your connection suffer because of their free wi-fi? if so, i'd be talking to my provider.

  25. p.s. take your own coffee and just sit in their parking lot. that'll show 'em. ;)

  26. Ha ha, oh yes, now that's a plan !!! ;D)
