Boston Cream and Gardens!

The great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.
                              Walter Bagehot

I stand here in the middle of the street in the village where I grew up; I am watching my Mom weed her next door neighbour’s garden. She has already finished weeding her own flower garden and apparently felt the need to help out the neighbours. They are not home and I am not sure if they even notice the constant tending that has been going on in their garden while they are at work. I do not care what she is up to as long as she is safe and happy. She is smiling and completely ignoring us so I know she must be contented. I wonder what the neighbours would have to say if they did happen to drive up.

Mom proceeds to make her way over to the side of their house to tend to the other garden. She pulls the weeds and gently places them beside the walk. My sister and I decide that before she heads into their backyard we will ask her if she would like to come into the house and join us for a cup of tea and her special surprise sitting on the kitchen table. She decides she needs a break and heads across the lawn and into the house.

You see my Mom has a secret admirer, every Friday there is a bag placed on her table where she sits to eat her cereal. This Tim Horton’s bag contains one very fresh Boston Cream chocolate covered donut. This is my Mom’s favourite. This is repeated every Sunday morning, and sometimes even Saturdays and Mondays. She looks forward to this and truly enjoys that look of sheer jealousy, and the subsequent drooling my watching her eat it usually brings.

You see my sister has an admirer who takes good care of her but I truly think he has a soft spot for Mom. This bag appears before Mom gets out of bed and heads to the kitchen table to have her breakfast. Mom is truly spoiled.

A couple of month’s back these bagged donuts were lined up in the refrigerator unopened. Mom was not coming to the table to have breakfast and was not really eating much of anything. We were all very worried but K continued to bring that Boston Cream every weekend without fail.

Three days before Mom was to turn 84 she again started waking up and heading to the kitchen table to eat a bowl of cereal and looked forward to that Boston Cream donut. This woman never ceases to amaze us.

There have been many Boston Cream donuts delivered and devoured since that scare and we are grateful. So I figure if my Mom wants to weed every garden on this little Village street then head in to enjoy her donut I am all for it.

Thank you K for continuing to make OUR MOM smile.

Later.

  3. What a sweet story! Boston creme is my favorite too. When I was pregnant with the twins and working full time, a coworker who used to drive by Krispy Kreme on his way to work (we don't have Tim Horton's) would stop off to pick one up for me sometimes. I don't think I've had one since though!

  10. So glad your mom is doing better..how I would love to have a boston creme every weekend...one of favs. The gardening reminded me of my dad...on both sides the neighbors would leave for the summer...my dad watered and maintained all of their yards for them...I don't think they ever knew then how much work he did because he never said a word. But I am sure they do now...xo
