Sure!

Nature’s loving proxy, the watchful Mother.
                   Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton

Driving down the highway I glanced over to see Mom admiring her hands with those purple striped gloves against the soft pink snuggly blanket wrapped around her legs on this blustery but still sunny day. I pull off to the side of the road to capture that moment. Mom poses her hands like a hand model, I tell her that, and she smiles and asks if there is such a thing, I tell her yes. I take three shots because she loves that I share her hand photos with my friends.

I remember writing Not Today Dear not too long ago and wondering if we would ever have more adventures like this. I have to say my Mom continues to surprise me with her incredible strength and sense of humour. I do hope to grow up to be just like her one day.

It was early afternoon when I walked into the house and I smiled when I noticed the spot where the Nativity had sat beside where Mom eats her breakfast, there now sat a couple of stuffed animals with smiling faces. I turned into the living room and passed where the Christmas tree had stood on that table for a very long time and was now covered in snow globes filled with Christmas scenes. Mom finally wanted to pack up parts of her Christmas last week and I always like to do what Mom wants if I can. The Christmas plates are still being used but she may eventually want to change them or not it is totally up to her. A plate is a plate to me.

I walked in to see her lying in bed and asked if she would like to go for a drive, her quick answer surprised me, that old familiar word ”Sure” spilled from her huge smile. I was so excited you would have thought it was Christmas all over again. I told her we would have to dress warm as it was very cold out but this would be a great adventure. We decided to go to Lizzy’s and have a tea and a visit. This was going to be fun.

Sitting on the side of the road taking photos of Mom’s glove covered hands we laugh at something and I feel my heart fill with joy mixed with a little sadness. I can see by her smiling very thin face these days are going to be few and far between for both of us and vowed to continue asking every day and hope for that “Sure” reply. She asks me if my friends would like to see the turtle ring again and I tell her no keep your gloves on it is cold and they know exactly what it looks like, I am reminded that her rings slip around her fingers now and am always afraid they will slip off. She smiles that familiar grin, she loves the attention and I do love giving it.

Mom suddenly looks at me with a puzzled look on her face and asks “Where’s my purse?” Oops, one thing I do know about “Little old ladies” (she does not like when I say that) is they need to know where their purses are at ALL times. I think quickly my mind is racing I remember that I was honestly so excited when Mom had agreed to go for the drive and was so surprised watching her jump out of that bed like she used too that I became caught up in the moment and basically just bundled her up quickly before she could change her mind and ran. I replied, I forgot it at home you won’t need it. “OK dear”, I love my Mom.

I pulled back onto the highway and continued down the road, I could see Mom out of the corner of my eye she was smiling and watching me, then looked back down to her gloved hands then out the window watching for any deer that run across here once in a while. I smile and wonder what she is thinking.

Mom kept thanking me over and over again as I was driving while I am thinking I am the one who is receiving the gift and I should be thanking her over and over for making my day. We turn the corner and head to the Lizzy’s place where family is waiting anxiously and where we will all sit and listen to Mom’s stories and enjoy every one of these precious moments over that cup of tea.

Later.

I will be posting only three days a week for awhile so I can focus on spending more time with my Mom and other things that need my attention. I am not sure how long this will last because honestly Blogging always relaxes me and takes my mind off things but I will give it a try. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thank you. Hug B

  7. I am so glad that you can have some great days with your Mom, Miss B! I am sure her smile and stories make your heart sing.

I went from 5 posts a week to 3, when I quit the town job. Sometimes I wonder how I kept up with doing 5 posts. I love blogging, but it does take time and dedication. It is my creative outlet and more than worth it.
