Happy Birthday Mom!

Excellent authority tells us that the right laughter is
medicine for weary bones.
                                  Carl Sandburg

It was not all about work down here on the farm over these past few weeks there were special occasions that would never be missed one very important one being my Mom’s 85th Birthday party.

The hay was lying in the fields fully dry but it knew the farmers would not be back there today because it was a very special day and it also knew it would not be forgotten and would be baled the next day after the special house full of hugs and love headed back to their lives in the city after the great celebration. Some things in life are more important and this was one of those things for sure.

That early morning I awoke to a beautiful sunny day and knew this was going to be a perfect day, it was exactly what I had ordered, great haying weather but more importantly for parties with cakes, food, laughter and lots of love. Hugs and stories were coming from far away to join in the celebration; the anticipation had been growing for weeks for this Farmgirl and her family. The Birthday Girl was excited about being the center of attention I had promised her that it would be a day she would not soon forget. All the family that could be there would be there and that was what she needed it was not all about the cake which by the way has a story in itself.

If you noticed in the photo above, that is not your average flower covered birthday cake. Mom has never owned, at least to my knowledge, a ship nor sailed on one for that matter but this has been a running joke in our family for as long as I can remember. That ship is the Mayflower and brother Earl was not going to let this special birthday go by without reminding Mom what that means to all of us. Let the laughter and Mom shouting out to Earl “You darn fool” comments begin.

My twin brothers Donny and Earl have always insisted that Mom had sailed over on the Mayflower because she was that old, Ok she may sound old to some of you but this running joke started when she was still in her forties, yes brothers Donny and Earl have a sense of humour and a contagious laughter that keeps all of us on our toes. I remember my Grandma telling me one time Earl made her happy because he always made her laugh. I am pretty sure everyone benefits from a sense of humour like that. Brother Earl actually found someone to create a Mayflower cake; now that is dedication to laughter, you have to admire that kind of thinking. The laughter and the look in Mom’s eyes said it all, there was no “You darn fool” comment when she seen it she was happy and so were we watching her face as she blew out the candles.

The party was wonderful there was much laughter floating down the street that I am sure the neighbours which we had invited over, for those do not disturb reasons, appreciated being in the center of it rather than wondering what all that noise was coming through their open windows. I truly love Mom’s neighbourhood, my old where I grew up neighbourhood, in the little village where I grew up. The people living in the houses may be somewhat different now but there is still a sense of community that cannot be beat. Everyone loves Mom, I am pretty sure it is her amazing sense of humour and her zest for life.

This 85th party house is connected to the land of the little house where I grew up and the chunk of land that My Hero bought back for me to explore and enjoy. This old dirt covered lot beside a newly built house waiting for a new family is now, during this celebration of 85 years, creating new memories for those same children, who used to play on it long ago, as well as their children and their children. Those laughing very excited children who were digging in the dirt where their Grandparents used to play, trying to find those missing treasures. The laughter was exactly the same, those old and new memories combining and floating through the air were being caught by all who watched and listened. My Dad would have loved this. Mom certainly did love watching excited children once again play in the dirt where she so very long ago watched her own children play.

My mind drifts back to a time where there seemed to always be laughter and dreaming going on no matter what challenges life brought to the door of that old house. This very same hunk of dirt part of an old homestead now gone and replaced by a fancy new house, where adventures and stories still linger in the minds of the ones left behind. The Mayflower may or may not have brought Mom here but this little hunk of land and all that laughter have kept her here. Life is good.

Happy Birthday Mom it was a great day and we love you so much. One memory that will stick in my mind has to be; does this dirt covered spoon look familiar? Her reply “Yes it does”. Oh yes more buried treasures and stories are waiting to be discovered. Earl piped up “Mom did it come over on the Mayflower with you?” She laughed out loud and we all smiled “You darn fool”. The laughter was overwhelming bringing a tear or two to this Farmgirl’s eye.

Hey Earl, good job with the cake, the laughter was unforgettable. Grandma was right you continue to make us laugh and happy.

  28. Happy Birthday "Mom"! I was just telling my Shug that I miss our neighborhood. The one he and I lived in....it's not the same. All of the older neighbors are gone and it's young people now. It's not a 'neighborhood' anymore. We are so fortunate to have such good childhood memories, you know that right?

  31. Isn't 'Mayflower' a lovely name for a ship? I grew up not far from Plymouth and every summer we would visit. It is surprisingly tiny.

  35. What a delightfully happy day you made for your mum and fun and memories for all your family. It must be wonderful to be one of a large family. Take it from virtually an only child, life is so different without relations etc. You are all so fortunate and the love you have for each other stands out so well.
