Quality Mother Daughter Time!

She wears her clothes as if they were thrown on her with a pitchfork.
                         Jonathon Swift

Well our refrigerator is jammed full of leftover turkey, mashed potatoes and the entire contents of a complete repeat Christmas feast that had filled our bellies and warmed our hearts. The Christmas tree lights are switched off right now but the star perched on the top catches my eye as the light from the window dances across the wall and points to it, I think back to the day before when the lights were twinkling and laughter and giggles were pulsing in the room. All is quiet now. The girls are still sleeping after a late night of stories, laughter and a few admitting shed tears, this holiday is almost over and our girls will return back to their regular lives in just one more day.

Today will be their annual Boxing Day shopping event, after last year’s silly notion of mine of needing to spend that so called quality time with the girl’s, I have decided that I will be avoiding this and will take the chance of feeling the guilt later. The thought of all those people (other Mothers) cramming into overflowing crowded buildings watching their kids spend gift cards that they received for Christmas and my trying to give unbiased advice and opinions on the endless outfits paraded in front of me from dressing rooms filled with an assortment of clothing hanging on hooks makes me cringe.

Honestly the thought of a day alone in a slightly messy house and a refrigerator full of leftovers for supper meaning nothing for me to do and the fact that I can remain in my flannels all day if I wish makes me smile. Sitting here in the kitchen enjoying the view and thinking about the last couple of fun filled days and wondering about the events that will be coming in the near future while watching the still ice covered trees is truly a better way for me to spend my time because it looks like things around here on the farm will be changing again.

It sounds like there is going to be a lot of planning and preparation going on for the next few months, we have been informed of an upcoming wedding here on the farm just around or after haying season so I am positive there will be lots of girl time coming up. I look forward to all the crazy things that will come with that announcement. I have also been informed that there will be some shoe shopping and dress shopping as coveralls and Pink Cadillac Boots are not really appropriate for the Mother of the Bride. Oh yes there is indeed going to be lots of “Quality Mother Daughter Time” ahead.

I look forward to all the future events that will come this year but for now I think I will just go rummage around under that unlit tree to find that good box of chocolates and enjoy the quiet time before the rush. I do hope you are all having as much fun as we are. I have a feeling you are all going to be hearing a lot more about this event in the near future also so you best rest up too.

  1. Oh Buttons! What wonderful news to have received and shared over Christmas! A wedding at home! Sweet....

I love a day to hang out in PJ's and just rest. I didn't get fully dressed yesterday until after dark, when we took the dogs for a walk.

Enjoy your downtime, and have fun knitting!

  2. beautiful photos, we have a wedding coming up too! I think I would choose to stay in instead of braving the maddening crowds, the stores don't open here in our city on Boxing Day,,

  10. Oh wow! Yes, Buttons! I'm ready to go with you as you shop for that Mother of the Bride dress! How exciting!

Yes, I really enjoy the "day after." The crazy pace that precedes Christmas is over, and I am able to enjoy the morning stillness enjoying the lighted tree for just a few more days.

  15. What a wonder festive season you are having and topped off with great news of impending marital proceedings. All such fun. You were very wise not to think about leaving the house on Boxing Day. The thought of all the crowds jamming the stores terrifies me. Bargains galore but how many of the shoppers really need what they are buying? "It's on special so I must have it!"
Look forward with much anticipation for more news about the nuptials. So exciting.

  20. How wonderful! Congratulations to your daughter! You will make a wonderful and beautiful mother of the bride, even if you can't wear your pink Cadillacs. :-)

I would have stayed home, too. I found I needed some quiet today after the busyness of the past two days.

  31. There you go painting my thoughts with words again. Are you bewitched? :-) Mrs. Clause brought me flannel p.j.'s with pictures of owls all over the pants. I thought of you. Enjoy you well deserved chocolate and time relaxing. :-)

  32. Lots of mother and daughter time here. The two went to a movie in the late afternoon of Christmas day (a growing trend over here) and then west to Boxing Day sales yesterday.

Today, J. is sitting before the unlit fire place, reading, while I am visit friends all over the world. There is a huge amount of food to eat, in fridge and freezer, but I'm not feeling hungry. Later, I'll shovel the snow that has fallen today. (It seems to snow a bit every day.)

Coveralls and Pink Cadillac Boots are ideal for a wedding on a farm. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

  36. Amazing news. I got married on my parents farm too. It was perfect and fun. Dad cutting down tree limbs on the morning of the wedding. The next day him trying to get the cultivator out the lane past the tulle lined laneway. It was awesome and worth all the extra stress of running the farm around a wedding. (PS: don't say wedding when hiring stuff they jack up the prices - white portable potties vs blue my god it's going out behind the shed for back up what do I care what colour it is)

  43. Love the Swift quote and it applies to me a lot of days. My attitude is "why bother" if I'm not leaving the farm and, sometimes when I am leaving the farm it's still "why bother". This time of year it's more about being warm.
The upcoming wedding sounds a delight.

  44. LOVE that quote :-D. Happy New Year!!!

  45. Well a wedding, what will you wear. Nice you had such wonderful Christmas and have some time off from feeding cows. May your new Year be filled with many more blessing.

  47. Congratulations on the wedding news! How fun. hmmmm....I wonder if you could put a vase in those pink cadillac boots and stick a bunch of flowers in them and use them for a centerpiece!

I did go shopping the day after...had fun....but now I'm ready to relax. Can you believe I have never spent an entire day in jammies, except when I've had the flu. I just can't do it. Well, except for Christmas Day this year, when my sister had us wear pj's...but that doesn't count because I cleaned up and got dressed, then changed when I got there. Had to visit the MIL.
