Harvesting, a party and pants…..

The advantage of doing one’s praising for oneself
is that one can lay it on so thick
and exactly in the right places.
                        Samuel Butler.

I cannot believe it is December already. The days just seemed to have disappeared. Some days I accomplished something and sometimes, not so much. Take Saturday for example, we were on the second weekend of the harvesting of that wood for our ravenous wood stove. I am a little disappointed in Mother Nature, she seems to have forgotten that I live in Canada and this morning I am looking at green grass, it is December after all. Enough about that complaining thing, I want to tell you about Saturday.

Early, and yes I mean early (even for me). The sun was just coming up and we had already had our porridge and coffee and dressed in layers. I found myself driving down the lane with my tractor pulling the dump wagon behind. I was following My Hero driving the backhoe, oh yes let the firewood harvesting continue. We still have one more weekend, and that is what I was focusing on. After all, if you remember My Hero had assured me three weekends would do it and I am holding him to that.

Why were we up that early? I am sure you were wondering. Well now, tonight was the annual company Christmas party and I have to say I was excited about a nice night out with a dinner, conversation and entertainment. I was excited but I knew we still had to get that wood up to the house because that snow was surely going to come soon.

It is so beautiful back here, the sun has now disappeared behind the clouds and I pull my toque lower over my forehead and put safety glasses on, stopping the wind that is picking up. My Hero wielding his chainsaw drops tree after tree while I stand back and take photos. He cuts them into logs, and that’s when my job starts. I pop back in the tractor, now the fun part happens.

I have to scoop up the logs with the prongs on the front of the tractor while he gets to give those hand signals. We are in the middle of a bush full of trees. Oh yes you know where this is going don’t you?

I am so excited about this party, we rarely go to parties and it has been a very busy week. I wanted to look nice; I think that is a girly thing. I had a nice pant suit but being height challenged I of course had to hem them. A busy week plus all this wood harvesting has kept me away from that job. My hope was to hem them before the party. Our working back in the bush and dropping trees I was positive My Hero, being a guy, had no idea how important this was.

My Hero is standing in front of the tractor and directing me through the trees while I am trying to pay attention to his hand signals. Also I was trying to concentrate on those low hanging tree branches overhead and threatening to take out the side mirrors. Then without warning, suddenly wondering how was I going to get those pants hemmed before the party. I know, I know not the time to think about that but what can I say, there it was.

Next thing I knew I was trying to fit that tractor through a small opening with the loader full of long logs wondering how they could possibly fit, I knew it is always about the angle. I stopped and gave him my own hand signal. My hands up in the air and a frown on my face meaning, “You’re kidding me, right?” He waves me ahead again and again and try as I might I could not fit it through.

There is one thing about My Hero that I love, he gets me. He signals to stop and then grabs his chainsaw cutting off the ends of those logs. Now, not having to worry about maneuvering I make it through to dump the logs in the wagon. Those hemming of pants still in my head I wonder if I could staple them and cover with black marker.

The day went on like that for a few hours till being exhausted we finally headed up to the house, with that wagon full of logs and a bucket full of wood for the stove. Netflix, a needle and thread and a nap in my chair with the needle in my hand I was now ready for my big night.

Later in the evening while enjoying that delicious food, stimulating conversation and funny entertainment I found myself wondering if........

anyone here actually knew how much effort it took for me to look this good.

Later.

  1. Did you staple them and use a black marker?
I doubt that but it added a nice flair to the story!
How many cords of wood does it take for Buttons and Hubs to stay warm for the winter!

  2. At least you have a chainsaw and tractor! Think how long it would all take if you had to use an axe and a team of horses...
So glad you had a good time, though! That is important, too!

  3. Aw, Bless you. That was a hard day's work before you went out to the party. My daughter used masking tape to hem her pants. :) I am glad that you made it though and even had a bit of a snooze before hand.

  7. You are so funny. I pictured that old movie where the guy tries to fit through the door while carrying something...a ladder, I think...and he's carrying it sideways so he can't get through the door and can't figure out why. lol xo

  13. We've been pulling logs out of the gully at my place too. It was almost fun yesterday when it was so warm. I did a face plant/roll in the mud while choking a HUMONGOUS Log! If the snow holds off we should have ours pretty much taken care of this week too.

  16. Yes, sometimes you wonder if all the effort put in is recognized but then it's not really about the clothes. It's the good time that counts.
