Five Decades! (Repost from April 18, 2011). BA This is for you. Sending you all my strength......

“Ay, there are some good things in life,
that fall not away with rest.
And, of all the best things upon earth, I
Hold that a faithful friend is the best.”
      Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton

Do you have a friend who has known you over fifty years?

I ran to the phone on Friday wondering who could it be. I smiled as I heard that familiar voice, the one I have heard over fifty years, fifty-three to be exact. My B.F.F. (best friend forever).

She was phoning to ask how I was, and if I was OK. Seems B, a regular reader of my blog, thought I sounded a bit down, she would know. She has seen the best, and the worst of me since we were five.

It was the summer, and we had moved into the house next door to hers. I was playing in a puddle in front of this new house (some things never change) and B came over to say hello. We became fast friends. She had brothers and so did I; we both agreed they were annoying sometimes.

She was very tall with blonde hair, and I was very short with blonde hair. Being two heads taller than I, then and now, we knew we would be friends forever.
Her Mother was a teacher and she was like my second Mother. B and I were inseparable; I would spend hours at her house, and she at mine.

When school started we would walk to school together every morning. When I moved a few blocks away, I would always walk to her house so we could walk together.

Her family always went on cool trips, which always included me; I was like one of the family. I still remember how special I felt.

B held my hand as we drove across the bridge to the U.S.A. I was cowering on the car floor terrified of heights, and bridges over the water. She never judged, always soothing my crazy thoughts.

We would sit on the bench together in high school sports. We always gave it our all, even though we were probably not the best players. Always enjoying the company of each other.

She did not laugh and say, “I told you so” when, on a class orienteering trip (navigating your way in the bush), thinking I was smarter and then her, ran off in the wrong direction. I was reading the compass wrong. I became terribly lost. They were holding the bus home till they found me. My sister begging, “don’t leave my sister.” B did not judge.

She was always there when I was picked on for being to small; I returned the favour when she was deemed too tall. Really!

Over the years we have went through births, deaths, heartache and joy. We have gotten married, and raised our children always keeping updated.

We do not live close, but we know when, or if that call comes, we will do anything to get there. B and her husband drove in a Canadian March blizzard to come to my Grandmother’s funeral, as she knew how it would affect me. I would do the same for her.

With the Internet it makes it much easier to keep in touch, I cherish our friendship and look forward to seeing her at our reunion, coming soon. We will get to see all those nice people that thought she was to tall, and I was to small. I can’t wait; we still have the best friendship of all.

Here is to another five decades. And by the way B, do not worry I am fine, and you will be too. B.F.F.

My best friend since we were five years old could use your hugs and prayers. Please send your comments to her. Thank you. Love you BA.

  10. Buttons, I have had the same dear friend for 55 years. We met in kindergarten. I was five. I have all our school photos and in every one of those, we stand side by side.
Sadly two years ago, she became ill with menengitis and she very suddenly developed severe dementia. Within a couple of months she no longer knew anyone and had to be admitted to a nursing home for full time care. At the time she was in her fifties.
I feel like she has died as now I'm a stranger to her. We live too far apart for me to be able to visit.
Thank you for reminding me of her- I miss her terribly. I will do a post about her in the future. Maa.
